Me

Ok, both of these pictures are the same picture, the first one I just cropped square. I uploaded them both using the 'biggest' setting on the upload page. why is the first one so much bigger? I'm going to have to figure this out, and start doing this on all my art blog pictures! I'm a dummy when it comes to stuff like this - Anyone got any advice or wisdom to share on this?

okay, so it's time to get my "geek" on! here's what's making the square pic bigger...

first, the facts:

1. the square pic you uploaded is 1600x1600 pixels, the rectangle pic you uploaded is 1600 high x 1067 wide
(these are the full-sized versions that you see when you click on the photos in the post. most likely, blogger is automatically converting your much larger original files to this size to conserve space on their servers)

2. by selecting the "large" setting in blogger, that essentially tells the blog to show a picture at 400 pixels high* - and the width will follow proportionately

3. the square pic appears on the blog post as 400 high x 400 wide - and the rectangle pic appears on the blog post as 400 high (see fact #2) x 267 wide

so, a pic that is 1600 pixels high will need to be divided by 4 to get it to 400 pixels high. since the width then just follows along proportionately, the width will be divided by 4 as well.

take the width of your square pic, divide by 4, and you get 1600/4=400 pixels wide

take the width of your rectangle pic, divide by 4, and you get 1067/4=266.75 pixels wide

so, the end result is:
both pics are the same height, but the square pic is 400 wide, while the rectangle is only 267 wide, making the square pic bigger.

*note:
if a photo is horizontally oriented, the "large" setting will make the width 400 pixels and the height will follow.

so now you know...

...that your neighbor is a complete nerd!

okay, so i just re-read my comment and am seeing how this might still be confusing. here's the "missing link" that i should have mentioned:

when you cropped your photo, you essentially made it shorter by cropping off pixels at the bottom. this by itself resulted in a square picture that had a SMALLER height than the un-cropped rectangular photo. the width stayed the same since you only cropped the bottom off.

now, once Blogger gets a hold of it and makes BOTH pictures 1600 pixels high, it has to "magnify" the shorter (square) pic to make it that high. therefore, the imagery within the square pic appears to be bigger.

okay, now i see that i should have just sent you an email with all of this info. or maybe a powerpoint presentation! ;)

feel free to delete these comments once you've gotten what you need from them. this is what happens when a digi-geek logs on too late at night!
