It doesn't matter that I've laid two blankets end to end. Someone isn't going to stick with the program. He rolls easily across the width of the living room and never stays where I leave him. 
If that darn couch weren't in his path, he'd just keep going, spitting up along the way.
We are heavily investing in carpet stain cleaner.

Can't you just train Lucy to follow behind him and lick up the trail he leaves behind? I think that's your best option!

Actually, Lucy LOVES that job, especially when Max is in the kitchen or there's spit up on his walker or excersaucer tray. She's already on it. It's harder when the stain is on the carpet. There is still an orange or green stain(depending on what he's eaten.
They say there's no keeping a good man down.
Here's an idea... could you lay sheets along the floor? Let Max roll around & then throw them all in the wash. :)
