Flood of '08

The second day of the Iowa Arts Fest was cancelled today due to the weather so we drove around a bit, along with everyone else, to look at the rising flood waters surrounding the Iowa River and the Coralville Reservoir. Dubuque street is closed and is flooded. On the right you can see the sign for Foster Road - the higher street that leads to our church. The lower street, Taft Speedway, is completely flooded.

Half of our church's parking lot is flooded and the water is expected to keep on rising. The river is expected to soon exceed the levels reached in the flood of 1993.
Assessing the situation:
What else to do, but kick off your shoes and go wading?!Two loads of sand were dumped in the parking lot, to begin sandbagging efforts to protect and save our church.
Here's the back of the church (on the right) - between it and Dubuque street. We are taking the picture from Foster Road.
Damon and Will are back at the church right now, helping to fill sandbags. Many volunteers are needed on short notice, so hopefully word of mouth will get around and help will be gotten.
***Update: Damon just called (he's been there about an hour and a half) and said that there are several HUNDRED people at the church right now, and they've sandbagged half way around the church! The sand trucks can't keep up! Everyone works for 15 minutes filling bags and stands around and waits 45 minutes for more sand to arrive! The Red Cross is there and they're handing out hotdogs to everyone. Isn't it amazing to see God at work! It is a privilege to get a glimpse of Something bigger than yourself at work. If I can get the other two boys fed soon, I may have to drive over with my camera.

I boiled the hot dogs and Amy and a couple other women served 'em up, not the Red Cross. But they were there with water...drinking water, that is! Rain, rain, go away.
